December 2009
We
have two popular varieties of freshly cut Norfolk grown Christmas trees
available now, and our prices remain the same as last year and 2007!
- 'non-drop'
Nordmann Fir - elegantly shaped and open-tiered with a pleasant fresh
fragrance and soft to the touch glossy green needles which hold
extremely well, making it an excellent choice for warm family rooms.
- traditional
Norway Spruce - dark green and bushy with a strong pine scent, this
variety is fast-growing which is an advantage in terms of cost, but
warm drying air indoors causes it to shed its thin sharp needles when
disturbed, so it's really best suited to cooler rooms and
conservatories, or to outdoor display.
Once
selected, we net your tree free of charg for you to transport it home
easily, or delivery may be arranged if required. Water-retaining
Christmas tree stands are also on sale.
~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~
~~~~ ~~~~
~~~~ ~~~~
Welcome
visitors to your house this year with a locally-made fir and holly
Christmas wreath adorning your front door, small and large sizes both
available
~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~
~~~~ ~~~~
~~~~ ~~~~
Within
our shop we have an extended variety of inspirational gifts for family
and friends, together with delicious preserves and refreshing juices
(great for hampers!), intriguing bonsai plants and accessories, plus a
good selection of glorious houseplants. We are open as usual 10am to
4pm Thursday to Monday, and will in addition be open on Tuesday 22nd
and Wednesday 23rd December as well as Christmas Eve for any
last-minute shoppers!
Wishing you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
We will be closed from Christmas Day through to Wednesday 13th January, reopening on Thursday 14th January 2010

November 2009
Autumn
is the time to plant out wallflowers which, come the Spring, will put
on an incredible show of colour over a very long flowering period, from
April through to June. 'Persian Carpet' is one of the most reliable
wallflower mixes available, offering fragrant flowers in glorious
shades of cream, apricot, gold, orange, rose and purple, at a compact
flowering height of about 35cm (14 inches). Our wallflowers are
bare-root and are just £1.25 for 10 chunky plants!
~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~
~~~~ ~~~~
~~~~ ~~~~
On
the theme of bare-root, now is the best time to transfer and establish
plants in this manner before the onset of winter. Field-grown plants
are currently being lifted to order and should be re-planted as soon as
possible, or at least heeled in to a spare patch of ground as a
temporary measure. Plants which are available bare-root include a vast
range of trees, fruit and hedging, plus a selection of roses and
herbaceous plants, all at very favourable cost in comparison to
container-grown stock. Please call us if you wish to discuss or place
an order.
~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~
~~~~ ~~~~
~~~~ ~~~~
Christmas
is approaching fast, but why not slow the pace down and browse round
the fabulous gifts and goodies our shop has to offer you. Solve a few
present dilemmas, choose some hamper fillers, order your Christmas
wreath, and consider when you'd like to come and select your fresh
Norfolk Christmas tree!

October 2009
The
Garden Enclosure is supporting National Conifer Week which runs from
3rd to 11th October, celebrating 'the most verstaile plants you will
ever buy'. No garden is complete without some form of evergeeen
planting, and with a huge number of conifers available, from
ground-cover to upright and from miniature to maginficent,
all-year-round grace, colour and interest can be achieved in any size
garden.
Not all conifers are green, there's a beautiful
variety of colours to enjoy, and many change colour during the course
of a year, such as the dwarf cone-shaped Picea glauca Daisy's White
which has creamy-white fresh spring growth turning to green as the
season progresses. As for shape, if you're looking for something tall
and slim, try Juniperus virginiana Blue Arrow (pencil cedar), or for
medium height, maybe the conical shape and purple winter colour of
Chamaecyparis thyoides Rubicon would make it the one for you. For dense
weed-suppressing ground-cover try juniper Green Carpet, or if the
colour isn't to your taste, there's always Blue Carpet.., and so on!
Throughout October
we will be giving a 10% discount off conifers purchased from our
extensive range, so why not take a look at the wonderfully diverse
selections of textures, shapes, sizes and colours available!
~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~
~~~~ ~~~~
~~~~ ~~~~
Orders
are now being taken for bare-root trees (ornamental and fruit), soft
fruit (raspberries, gooseberries, blackcurrants etc) and hedging.
Lifting will begin when the temperature drops and the plant go into
winter dormancy.
~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~
~~~~ ~~~~
~~~~ ~~~~
WINTER OPENING: Please note that from November 1st until February 28th we will be closing at the earlier time of 4pm

September 2009
September
is spring bulb time, planting can begin just as soon as you're ready
(with the exception of tulips - plant these from mid-October onwards to
prevent them coming up too early and being damaged by frost). Prepared
hyacinths and paperwhite narcissi are suitable for indoor growing, so
why not get potting soon to produce some fragrant Christmas presents -
plus an extra one for yourself! For outside, try the 'foxy' Fritillaria
imperialis Rubra, or beautiful alliums, tulips or daffodils. If these
are too tall for your borders, try native bluebells and wild snowdrops,
or crocus and the new Anemone coronaria Bordeaux which has deep
chocolate/red flowers. If you'd like some instant colour, we have
spectacular Colchium (Autumn crocus), Album (white) and Water Lily
(double pink).
~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~
~~~~ ~~~~
~~~~ ~~~~
It's
time to start thinking about colour to brighten the dull days of the
coming autumn and winter months. Winter pansies and violas are availabe
now in mizxd or single colour packs, these cheery plants look fabulous
in pots and hanging baskets or just in the borders, and although their
flowering performance slows down during the harshest weather, the show
returns given a couple of better days. Try planting with mini cyclamen
if the position is sheltered, or with small evergeen shrubs or some
winter heathers. Pop in some spring bulbs for extra colour and added
value!
August 2009
Beware
of wasps! It's been an early start for wasps this year, and now that
they've given up hunding for caterpillars and aphids, their attention
has turned towards sweeter things such as ripening fruit and anything we
like to eat or drink. To ease the annoyance, particularly when you're
eating outdoors, try using a Honeypot Wasp Trap. Just add some bait,
such as sugared water, squash, juice, etc. and hang the trap away from
you, the wasps enter the trap via a hole in the base and are unable to
fly out. Simple but it works! Honeypot Wasp Traps are available now in
a range of decorative colours.
~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~
~~~~ ~~~~
~~~~ ~~~~
We
continue to be a little potty at The Garden Enclosure, and now offer a
new range of terrazzo pots. These stunning black marble-like containers
are modern, clean-lined and very chic, ideal for contemporary gardens
and for architectural or feature plants. Prices start at only £6.99. A
quick reminder about our free potting service - choose a container and
plants and we can combine them for you. We only charge for the
materials used.
~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~
~~~~ ~~~~
~~~~ ~~~~
We
have a further selection of amazing fine art prints from artist Natalie
Mascall, recent finalist and category winner ('Endangered Species') in
the BBC Wildlife Artist Of The Year 2009 awards. The detail of her work
is simply incredible, come along and have a look!
New
Guinea Impatiens give a fantastic show of summer colour, and will
continue to bloom outdoors right through to the first frosts if you
take care of them. They require regular watering, dead-heading and
feeding, and are happy in a semi-shaded position. Why not brighten up
your borders, pots, baskets or home now with these magnificent plants,
only £2.49 each.
~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~
~~~~ ~~~~
~~~~ ~~~~
We've
crossed the border for our pure apple juice supplier. Stoke Farm
Orchards in Suffolk produce the award-winning Appletree Hill brand of
juices using apples which are picked, pressed and bottled on the farm.
Single variety juices such as Cox, Discovery and Spartan are available,
together with blends which include Apple and Elderflower, or Ginger and
Apple.
~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~
~~~~ ~~~~
~~~~ ~~~~
Now
that the brighter weather is here, make the most of the day-time
sunshine to power solar ligthing in the garden, adding new interest to
your night-time outlook. We have various styles of solar lighting;
stainless steel post lights, suitable for modern gardens and for
marking paths and driveways, fun and 'funky' lights in colourful pink,
purple, green or yellow casings, and 'olde worlde' coach light lanterns
complete with metal shepherds crooks for hanging them from.
June 2009
Now
that the warm days and evenings are here your sun-drenched patio area
comes into its own, but if it's looking a little stark at the moment
why not plant big pot-fulls or drifts of herbs alongside where they
will get brushed as you pass by, and release their aromatic scents into
the air. Use lavender, rosemary, and the silver-leaved Helichrysum
italicum angustifolium, the Curry plant, which smells strongly of
Indian cooking (if you like your curry mild grow the variety Korma
which is less intense!) Add pots of basil, chives, thyme, and a couple
of bay trees to frame your patio door and the setting is complete!
~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~
~~~~ ~~~~
~~~~ ~~~~
We
have increased our selection of garden pots with the addition of a
frost-proof range from Clough Mill. Available in 4 glaze colours and a
variety of styles to suit any garden setting, these pots will withstand
the rigours of British winters, handling temperatures down to -10
degrees C without flaking or cracking. We will continue to offer a
great selection of frost-resistant pots and bowls including traditional
terracotta, salt-glazed and contemporary glazed, all at very
competitive prices!
~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~
~~~~ ~~~~
~~~~ ~~~~
The
Garden Enclosure will be open during the evening of Saturday 27th June
for Banham Zoo's once-a-year evening opening, the magical 'Zoo-Do', and
Event which starts at 1pm.
We
have a fantastic supply of summer bedding and basket plants which give
an early glimpse of the magnificent displays to be enjoyed in the
months ahead. Popular choices for sunny spots include geraniums,
petunias, verbena and lobelia, while for shady sites busy lizzies,
fuchsias and begonias can be relied on to cheer the gloom. Available in
bush or trailing forms, some single or double flowered, and a multitude
of colour options, these few choices offer huge scope whatever your
taste and requriement may be - but don't let that stop you from trying
something a little different for a change!
~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~
~~~~ ~~~~
~~~~ ~~~~
Amongst
our full range of composts, we now offer a peat-free multi-purpose
compost made from green waste. The waste is composted down on an
industrial scale to generate temperatures high enough to kill
weeds and soil borne pathogens, it's then blended with coir fibre,
plant food, and an organic wetting agent to produce a consistently fine
and crumbly growing medium. This unique formula carries the Organic
Farmers and Growers approval mark. Available in 60 litre bags, £3.99
each or 3 bags for £10, sustainable peat-free compost that doesn't cost
the earth - in fact it's the same price per litre as our normal
peat-based multi-purpose!

April 2009
If
'flowers make a garden', why not fill yours with magnificent herbaceous
perennials? A mixture of lupins, delphiniums, foxgloves, and hardy
geraniums conjure up that classic cottage garden look. Alternatively,
for sunny positions try Salvia argentea with its large soft woolly
leaves, or Sedum 'Frosty Morn', an ice-plant with cream margins to the
foliage and a magnet for bees and butterflies when in flower. If your
border is bright but heavy and wet, try Lobelia cardinalis 'Queen
Victoria', with its stunning bright red flowers over maroon shiny
leaves, or its cousin 'Dark Crusader' with matt red foliage that looks
like icing sugar has been dusted across it! Visit now to select some
treasures to enjoy in your own garden!

March 2009
There's
an amazing abundance of colour to be enjoyed in our gardens during this
month. Primroses, cyclamen coum, pulmonaria and heathers carpet the
ground, above them rise early spring bulbs and magnificient hellebores.
Higher still, spring-flowering evergreen shrubs such as Daphne odora,
sarcococca and camellias, and deciduous shrubs including chaenomeles,
Corylopsis pauciflora and Cornus mas which proudly show off their
blooms on otherwise bare stems. If your garden or a border in it, fails
to offer any interest at this time of year, call in for inspiration and
fill that gap!
~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~
~~~~ ~~~~
~~~~ ~~~~
While
we have pots of spring bulbs for instant effect and infill planting
now, we also have a great selection of packaged summer-flowering bulbs
for your garden. Choices include old favourites such as dahlias,
nerines, gladioli and lilies together with the more exotic Colocasia
Coco (a huge bulb this year!) and new Zantedeschia introductions
'Picasso' and 'Flame'. Enjoy the spring bulb flower show currently on
offer, but also plan ahead for a summer bulb extravanganza!
February 2009
Now's
the time to plan your garden for the coming season. Think about last
year, did all your plants perform well? Was there enough colour? If the
answer to either is no, it may be time for a change. Take a look at
your garden now, does it appear flat and lack structure since the
herbaceous perennials have died down? Winter is the time we appreciate
the colour and effect of evergreens, the interesting bark colours and
textures of deciduous trees and shrubs, and the beauty and fragrance of
winter-flowering plants. Consider using bright-stemmed cornus,
snake-bark maples, fragrant wintersweet or brightly-flowering witch
hazels, and evergreens such as pittosporum, euonymus or sweetly-scented
Christmas box. As always, we offer planting suggestions and advice.
~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~
~~~~ ~~~~
~~~~ ~~~~
Onion
and shallot sets, and seed potatoes are now in stock. Why not make 2009

and give the advice required to produce fresh, great tasting healthy
food for you and your family.

perennial take a look at the many heuchera choices that are now

Ole, Mint Frost, etc. We have a good selection of 2 litre plants, only

Do
you love trees but lack space? We can solve this problem with our
selection of fascinating bonsai. We have both indoor and outdoor
varieties in a range of sizes, each one skilfully trained by hand
over a number of years into unique miniature trees. Advice and care
guides are avaialble to help you if you're new to bonsai growing. We

trays together with specialist composts and information for more
experienced enthusiasts. Indoor trees start at just £6.99.
~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~
~~~~ ~~~~
~~~~ ~~~~
To
encourage more natural diversity into your garden, try growing native
wildflowers amongst your borders, or if you have a larger plot or
neglected area, reserve it as a haven for wildlife. Small insects and
butterflies which are attracted to your flowers will act as natural
pest controllers and plant pollinating partners. We have locally grown
wildflower plants available, plus wildflower seeds from 'Suffolk
Herbs'. Help and advice on natural gardening is available, please
enquire.
~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~
~~~~ ~~~~
~~~~ ~~~~
If
you have some spare space on the vegetable plot, don't leave it unused!
Try planting over-wintering onion sets and garlic bulbs. These are
tough enough to withstand the rigours of winter and will start into
growth soon after planting, making the most of any mild days to build
themselves up ready to produce large crops in late spring / early
summer, weeks ahead of spring planting. Onion sets are avaiable at
the shop now, and garlic bulbs will be in shortly.

August 2008
Now
is the time to start planning your autumn and spring bulb displays.
Choose large firm bulbs, as these have more flowering potential, and
plant as soon as possible to prevent the bulbs from drying out. We have
cyclamens and the beautiful Colchicum 'Waterlily' for your autumn
display, and a great selection to brighten up your garden at the start
of a new gardening year, ranging from standard choices including
narcissi, tulips, native snowdrops and bluebells, to more unusual
spring bulbs such as fritillarias and erythroniums.
~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~
~~~~ ~~~~
~~~~ ~~~~
If
you feel inspired to create a touch of the exotic in your own back
garden we can supply some amazing plants and the advice needed to
achieve that tropical or jungle feeling. Try Paulownia 'Fast Blue',
gunnera, Isoplexis canariensis, Embothrium lancelatum (Chilean fire
bush) and eucomis, mix with drifts of Arundo donax (giant elephant
grass) or bamboo, and feel yourself transported to a different place
without leaving home!
Planting
a mix of early, mid-season and late-flowering perennials ensures an
abundant succession of colour in your garden. Be inspired by plants of
the moment such as verbena, agapanthus, coreopsis and hemerocallis, and
plant in combination with earlier flowering perennials such as lupins,
violas and geum, or the later-flowering asters, lobelias, eupatorium
and sedum. We have a superb range of perennials, together with many
other choice plants, and as always, planting suggestions and advice is
available if required!
Breathe
in and breathe out... we all rely on air to live, and for some plants
that's all that they need, taking all their moisture and nutrients from
the air around them, naturally growing on rocks and trees, held on by
roots which are only used for support. You can enjoy these amazing
'airplants' (Tillandsia) indoors where they are very easy to keep,
requiring average light and warmth, and a humid atmosphere (or an
occasional mist spray of water). We stock individual airplants costing
£1.99 for you to use in the creation of your own display, or complete
ornamental arrangements which are priced from only £3.99.
It
is said that for the best taste, use the freshest of ingredients, and
this is certainly true when it comes to appreciating the subtle
flavours of herbs. We offer an impressive range from a local specialist
nursery. Plants are grown in a loam-based compost to provide an open
free-draining soil for strong root growth. Selections include different
varieties of everyday herbs such as rosemary, mint, parsley and thyme,
together with more exoitic and adventurous choices including caraway,
tarragon and lemon verbena. Please inquire if the herb you're looking
for isn't in stock.
~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~
~~~~ ~~~~
~~~~ ~~~~
The
pendulous blooms of fuchsias can be relied on to flower all summer long
and into the autumn. Plant in a semi-shaded position, keep well
watered, feed with a liquid or slow-release fertiliser, and remove
faded flowers regularly to encourage continued flowering. Choose
between bush, trailing, and hardy fuchsias - all available now.

give advice on the most suitable type for your selected plant. Choices
include John Innes, ericaceous, peat-free, grow-bags and multi-purpose,

Day, February 14th. Throughout this month we will be giving a 20%
discount off our £4.99 timber nest boxes, and 10% off any other
nest box purchased! We stock a great range of attractive boxes,
open-fronted for birds such as robins and wagtails, and small-holed for
nuthatches and members of the tit family. We also stock little owl
boxes, and sparrow terraces (a three chambered box, luxury
accommodation for this social bird, the target species of this year's
BTO promotion). A variety of wild bird feeds and different types of
feeders are always available in the shop, including a new range of
brightly coloured feeders, great for getting childern interested in

Oriental
hellebores are already giving a fantastic show of early spring colour.
These attractive plants, with their speckled nodding flower-heads
thrive in semi-shade and are quite happy in heavy soils. Although
evergreen, their flowers are produced before the fresh leaf growth, so
to show off the blooms to their best cut off any old and tatty leaves
as the flowering spikes emerge from the soil. We have locally
grown plants in a range of colours including white, pink, cream and
dark plum, large three lite plants only £5.49 each or two for
£10.00.

There is
nothing quite like a real Christmas tree to bring the season’s
magic alive, so visit now and select yours! We have two types
available in a range of sizes, and we will re-net your chosen tree free
of charge for you to transport it home easily.
Blue Spruce (Picea Pungens Glauca)
A
beautiful traditional style of tree, similar to Norway Spruce in
shape. Glaucous blue colour, with a fresh pine fragrance which
fills the room. Needle retention is reasonable, and is
particularly good in cool rooms.
Nordmann Fir (Abies Nordmanniana)
A
deep glossy green and open-tiered tree, which creates a broad
elegant pyramid shape. It has soft to the touch needles which
hold extremely well. An excellent ‘non-drop’
choice, great for warm family rooms.
All of our Christmas trees are grown locally in Norfolk and are cut
just prior to delivery to us, ensuring that you get the freshest tree
possible to take home. Water-retaining Christmas tree stands are
also available in a choice of colours.

Orchids make one of the most stunning gifts to give or receive.
Their exotic looks give them the reputation of being hard to keep,
however this is not always the case. The beautiful Phalaenopsis,
or ‘Moth Orchid’ is really quite easy, requiring average
room temperature, reasonable light, and never being left sitting in
water. This orchid will hold its flowers for around 3 months, and
can be back in flower a few months later. We also have
Cymbidium orchids plus specialist compost and fertiliser.
